Help Your Child Make an Educated Decision about E-Cigarettes

Sweetwater County Prevention Management Organization (PMO) wants to help parents educate their children about vaporizers, e-cigarettes, and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

E-cigarette advertising is targeted towards young people. Current data shows that significant numbers of youth are trying or regularly using ENDS (see data below). We need to help them understand the effects of their choices so they can choose wisely once they reach the age where they can legally use ENDS.

The choice to use ENDS is yours. Make sure it is an educated one.

My desire is not to tell parents or youth what they should and shouldn’t do. Rather, I want to provide them with some information so they can make educated choices on things that will impact their health and lives.”

Here are some of the facts about electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

  • They are still highly unregulated, shops mix their own liquids or they often times come from overseas.
  • The range of particulate matter inhaled and exhaled depends on the device – some may be less harmful than cigarettes, other more harmful than cigarettes.
  • They contain carbonyl groups which are carcinogenic in nature.
  • They are marketed to youth which is why we see 29.6% current use and almost 50% of youth trying these devices.
  • They are being normalized by media and the availability to be exempt from tobacco-free laws – which make more people who were non-tobacco users, into tobacco users.
  • Approx 80% of people who use e-cigs to try to quit smoking, end up using both cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.
