My name is Jackie Freeze, and I am a lifelong resident of Rock Springs. I retired in June from a long and satisfying career at Western Wyoming Community College, where I held a number of positions, including, most recently, that of Vice President for Student Success Services.
I made the decision to run for House District 48 for a number of reasons. I am entering a new phase of my life in which I will have more time to do things that weren’t possible during my busy career. I have been extremely lucky in work and life and owe a lot to Wyoming and to my community. I believe that I can make a difference and that it is time for me to give back to the State that has been so good to me. I am a learner, and I enjoy research and studying difficult issues and challenges. I have the administrative experience necessary to look at issues from a strategic perspective and to make decisions based upon the best available information at a given point in time.

This is a very difficult time economically for our State and we need people who are open to various options and who are willing to make hard decisions. I think I can do that. I can also bring new energy and a set of fresh eyes to the table, since I have no special agenda or previous experience in this arena.
Our biggest current issue in the State is revenue and how to make sure that what is special about Wyoming can continue to thrive during an economic downturn. Our schools, colleges and University are impacted. Our cities and counties are facing major cuts. Social services and public health and safety have made deep cuts in their budgets. Industries and businesses throughout the State are experiencing hard times and many have closed their doors. The Legislature faces the difficult task of managing the State’s resources during a time when every action has a potentially negative reaction.
Our dependence on mineral extraction industries has stood us well over the years but presents major challenges at this time. We need to diversify our economy and foster an environment that supports new industries. Our residents must have access to the education and training that will be critical in providing qualified workers to our industries. People need quality health care and other social services. We need to protect our lands and keep our population safe. All of these things impact budget decisions. The Legislature needs to look at all options for managing revenues for the State.
My promise is that, if elected, I will do my very best to represent the needs and interests of the constituents in my District, in Sweetwater County, and in Wyoming as a whole. I will use the skills I have developed over the years to bring to our Legislature sound leadership and management experience, and an ability to understand, analyze, and make good decisions in difficult settings.
I love Wyoming and want us to prosper.
