GREEN RIVER – The ladies of Green River overcame a slow start but Evanston was too much in the end as the Lady Red Devil took the win, 52-42. With the loss, the Lady Wolves move to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Evanston scored the first eight points of the game but threes by Andri Dewey and Mallory Seymour had Green River within four after one quarter, 12-8. Taylor Stoeger had a big second quarter and with under a minute to go in the half, had the Lady Wolves even at 22. Evanston hit a free throw with four seconds to take the one-point lead at the break, 23-22.
The ladies had opportunities to take the lead in the third quarter but missed several free throws. Despite their shooting struggles, Green River was able to stay even and had the game knotted up at 30. The Lady Red Devils ended the third and started the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to go up 39-32. Stoeger scored three straight to pull Green River back to four but Evanston answered seven straight to jump back up 11.
Stoeger ended the run with two free throws to cut the lead back to single digits with three minutes left. After four straight by Evanston, Madelyn Heiser converted a three-point play but the Lady Devil lead to was too large to overcome late. Stoeger finished the night with 18 points to led the way for Green River.
The Lady Wolves will return to the court Friday as they look to get that first conference win. They face Jackson who moved to 4A this season and are yet to win a game as they sit at 0-10. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
