Lady Wolves Focused on Strong Finish

GREEN RIVER – The Green River Lady Wolves had opportunities against 4A East-leading Laramie on Saturday but struggled closing out sets as the Lady Plainsmen swept the match.

After two months on the road, the Lady Wolves finally stepped foot on their home floor Saturday. Green River entered play looking to shake off a conference loss to Evanston last time out. Laramie was coming off a road win in Rock Springs.

Green River led for most of the first set and was up late 20-16 behind strong defense and serving. Laramie outscored the Lady Wolves 9-3 to take game one, 25-23. Behind strong serving by Andri Dewey, Green River jumped up 6-0 to start the second. Talor Stoeger had several kills during the next few points as the ladies of Green River maintained a five-point advantage, 10-5.  Like the first set, Laramie came back to even the match and pass the Lady Wolves. Green River remained within striking distance but could not get the momentum back dropping the second, 25-17.

Behind strong serving by Andri Dewey, Green River jumped up 6-0 to start the second. Talor Stoeger had several kills during the next few points as the ladies of Green River maintained a five-point advantage, 10-5.  Like the first set, Laramie came back to even the match and pass the Lady Wolves. Despite solid points by the Green River, the Lady Plainsmen pulled away to take set two, 25-17.

The third set started out like thir first two as strong serving by Kaitlyn Banks had the ladies of GRHS up 6-2. Abby Alcorn also showed her serving skills and kills by Stoeger and Dewey kept Green River out front, 9-5. The Lady Plainsmen came back evening the match at 14 and passed the Lady Wolves. Banks and Stoeger made a late push but in the end it was Laramie in the sweep, 25-19.

The Lady Wolves will be at home again on Wedneday as the welcome Rock Springs in the annual breast cancer awareness match. Green River already has a win over Rock Springs in Rock Springs. The Lady Wolves won the first two sets in the first meeting but dropped the next two. In the end, Green River escaped with a five-point win in the fifth and final set.
