CHEYENNE – A strong doubles performance put the Green River Lady Wolves in the third spot for the South Regional Championships over the weekend. All three doubles teams finished in second place.

Laramie has been one of the favorites for a state title all year and showed why winning the South Region by 21 points over Torrington. The battle for second was close with three points separating second through fourth. Torrington finished with 39 followed by Cheyenne Central with 38 and Green River with 37.

At the No. 1 doubles spot, the Lady Wolves team of Isabel Leininger and Alex Palmer battled on Friday to earn a spot in the finals. They won two, three-set matches on the opening day of the tournament. On Saturday, Leininger and Palmer faced a tough Torrington team and would come up just short in a straight-sets loss.

Ashlyn Edwards and Kaitlyn Sharp also earned a spot in Saturday’s finals at No. 2 doubles going 2-0 on Friday. After dropping the first set to Laramie on Satuday, Edwards and Sharp battled back but a late break in the second set put the team in second for the tournament, 6-2 and 7-5.

The final individual Regional title hopes for the Lady Wolves was in the No. 3 doubles. Audrie Harrison and Kelby Pope won two, competitive matches on Friday and Saturday was no different. They faced Laramie in the finals and lost key points to fall in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3.

In singles, Anna Ujvary finished fourth after losing to Torrington’s Jade Palmer in the consolation finals.

The Lady Wolves will be chasing State titles next weekend in Gillette. The Regional Tournament is used to set seeding for state which puts Green River in a solid spot. For a complete look at the brackets go to Wyopreps.com.
