Leininger and Palmer Lead Lady Wolves On Day One

GILLETTE – Led by the team of Isabel Leininger and Alex Palmer, the Green River Lady Wolves finished the first day of the 2016 State Tennis Championships in the eighth position. Leininger and Palmer still have title hopes alive.

The Lady Wolves scored 6.5 points on the opening day. Laramie leads with 13 points followed by Kelly Walsh with 11.5 and Cody with 10. Tied for fourth are Torrington and Cheyenne Central with 9.5 points. Although Leininger and Palmer are the only Lady Wolves with championship hopes on the table, every one of the ladies from Green River will be in action on Friday.

No. 1 Singles

After losing in the opening round, Anna Ujvary responded beating Riverton’s Alyssa Mcdonald, 6-0, 6-0. She will face Gillette’s Kayla Sankovich to open play on Friday.

 

No. 2 Singles

Haylen Cordova lost in her first match but advanced in the consolation bracket. She will face Kryslin Poppie of Rawlins to open play on Friday.

 

No. 1 Doubles

Isabel Leininger and Alex Palmer won both matches to move into Friday’s semifinals. In the opening match against Natrona, they opened with a 6-2 win but drop the second 6-3. In the final set, it was all Leininger/Palmer with the 6-1 win. Jackson was up next and the ladies of Green River dropped the first set 6-2. They came right back to take the next two and keep their state title hopes alive, 6-3 and 6-4. They face the Gillette team of Bridges and Holland in the semifinals on Friday.

 

No. 2 Doubles

Ashlyn Edwards and Kaitlyn Sharp dominated in their opening win but dropped a tough three-setter to Sheridan, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.. They will take on the team from Jackson on day two.

 

No. 3 Doubles

Audrie Harrison and Kelby Pope were solid in their 6-0, 6-0 opening win. In the quarters against Sheridan, the ladies would drop a tough 7-5 first set. Sheridan followed it in the second with a 6-3 win. Harrison and Pope will open with Mccool  and Tucker from Jackson on Friday.
