Macy takes second in Lander while Ryan and Martinez finish fourth for Tigers

ROCK SPRINGS – Winning and losing in sports is always high on everyone’s list but learning and growing every time out makes a better competitor. The Tiger wrestling team continues to show growth after a solid performance in Lander.

The Rock Springs Tigers continued to climb the ladder at the Lander Invitational as they finished 15th in a large field featuring some of the best in the state. At the top were schools who historically have always been wrestling powerhouses in the state. Powell finished first while Douglas and Star Valley were right behind.

Individually, Rock Springs had three Tigers place while others picked up good wins over the two days. At the tournament, the Tigers were led by Danny Macy who fought his way to a second-place finished at 113. On the season, Macy has a strong 16-4 record.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Macy made quick work in the second round scoring a pin over a Cody wrestler at the 2:56 mark. In the quarters, Macy went the distance against a wrestler from Jackson to score a major decision, 13-2. Macy was strong in the semis going up against Keanan Plisterer of Wind River. Plisterer entered the match 17-2 overall. Macy was able to get control and scored a big win by pin at the 3:00 mark. In the finals, Macy faced off against Lander’s Mark McConnell who is 27-6 on the season. Macy and McConnell went the distance in a match that went right down to the end. McConnell was able to squeak out the win, 4-3.

Also at 113, Trevor Ryan has been solid for Rock Springs all season with a record of 26-9 and was again at Lander finishing in the fourth spot. Ryan started his run pinning everything is sight. After a bye in round one, Ryan pinned his next two opponents. He slipped a little in the semi-finals as he was beat by the eventual winner of the division, McConnell. He responded with a pin in the consolation semis but dropped to Plisterer in the third-place match.

The final placer for the Tigers in Lander was Wyatt Martinez at 120. Martinez entered with a 24-13 record and fought to a fourth-place finish. The first two rounds were tough but Martinez battled through to take decision wins. In the first round he won by a 5-4 decision and in the second pulled out an 8-6 win. In the quarter-finals, Martinez again went the distance but this time had a little more of a cushion winning by major decision, 13-2.

Heading into the semi-finals, Martinez had a big challenge as he faced one of the best in the state,  Vinchinzo Castle of Thermopolis. Vinchinzo has a record of 25-3. In the end, Martinez lost by technical fall. He responded in the consolation semis with another tight win by decision 7-6 but was beat in a third-place match.

Tiger William Petrovich scored two points for the team with a win in the 145-weight division.

The Tigers will be at home, Jan. 31 as they will welcome Kelly Walsh, Natrona and Riverton.
