GREEN RIVER – Winning in any sport is always gratifying but to winning in front of the home fans makes it a little more special. The Green River Wolves dominated to add another Bill Thoman Memorial trophy to the case.

After winning the Evanston Invite, taking second in a 36-team field at the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction and fifth in one of the biggest Utah Tournaments, the Wolves were on a mission to protect their house.

Over the two days, the Wolves beat seven teams on their way to the title. Green River beat Moffat County, 62-12, Cheyenne South, 65-15, Lander, 54-17 and Scottsbluff, 53-24. The seven wins also included key victories over Douglas, 46-34 and Uintah, 38-29.

Uintah is one of the best regional high school wrestling squads and the win was a little extra special for Green River as they opened the season with a loss in a dual to Uintah, 42-27.

Individually, the Wolves had several top finishers including three moving on to the Best of the Best bracket on Saturday.

At 106, Cyro Montoya finished the tournament 7-0 to punch his ticket to the Best of the Best. Six of Montoya’s wins were by pin including four in the first period. He continued that in the best bracket as he defeated Evanston’s Sam Lester by pin at the 3:28 mark.

Cole Verner continued to show why he is in every conversation about the best wrestlers at 120. Verner also finished 7-0 in the duals with three by pin, one technical fall and one major decision. In the Best bracket, Verner found himself in a dogfight against Keegan Hessler of Scottsbluff. This was the second meeting of the two with Verner winning a 5-3 decision. He matched it in the Best with another 5-3 decision.

Gage Byers also earned a spot in the Best bracket at 126 going 6-1. In his six wins, five were by fall and the sixth was by technical fall. His only loss was against Uintah’s Kendrick Coons and in the Best bracket the two would meet again. Coons got Byers in the dual round, 12-2, and did it again in the Best of the Best, 16-1.

Several Wolves just missed competing in the best bracket finishing 6-1. They included Jordan Tucker at 285, Hunter Hanks at 170, Shandon Welsh at 145 and Nathan McCann at 113. Of Tucker’s six wins, five were by fall while the rest of the six-match winners won four by fall.

Four Wolves finished with 5-2 records at the Memorial. They were Brendan Hopkins at 220, Austin Waters at 152, Colton Hopkins at 138 and Chase O’Melia at 132.

 

Rock Springs Tigers

For the Tigers, they lost three duals in pool play to Jackson, 48-28, Cheyenne Central 54-11 and Uintah, 72-3. In Consolation bracket wrestling, the Tigers lost three close duals to Kelly Walsh, 48-26, South, 48-30 and Rifle, 42-24. In the final dual for Rock Springs, Evanston got the best of the Tigers in a 66-12 win.

Individually, several Rock Springs wrestlers had a strong tournament. Trevor Ryan has been one of the Tiger leaders at 113 and was again at the Memorial. Ryan went 6-1 in the duals to earned a spot in the Best bracket. Out of Ryan’s six wins, four came by the way of pin. His only loss during dual action was against Uintah’s Wyatt Sharp in a wild 12-7 battle. In the Best bracket, Ryan faced off against Mairo Ybarra of Scottsbluff. Ryan came up short in a 6-0 decision.

There were several other Tigers who also had a good tournament. Wyatt Martinez went 5-2 at 120 with two wins by pin and another by technical fall, 18-2. Several Rock Springs wrestlers finished 4-3 over the two-day Memorial. They included William Petrovich at 145, Ira Dickinson at 132 and Mason Randall at 126.

 

Up Next

For Green River, they will head to Idaho Falls, Idaho for a three-day tournament starting on Jan. 22. They will they return home as they will host a dual against Star Valley in what has historically been a tough battle between two of the state’s best programs.

For Rock Springs, fans will not have to wait long to see the Tigers in action again as they host a dual with Evanston and Wednesday. They will then head to Lander for a two day tournament starting Jan. 23.
