ROCK SPRINGS — Mason Christiansen is the latest Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) wrestler to join an NCAA Division I wrestling program.

Earlier this month, Christiansen announced that he had made his decision to join Oregon State University (OSU) this upcoming season.

Christiansen served the Mustangs in the 174 weight division last season, reaching the championship match of the 2021 NJCAA Wrestling Championships. He was one of ten All-Americans on the team last season, making history as the first team in NJCAA history to have ten All-Americans.

After Nationals, Christiansen was contacted by a handful of coaches, including Chris Pendleton from OSU. A conversation led to Christiansen taking a trip out to Corvallis, OR for a three-day visit.

From the school’s facilities down to the culture of the program, Christiansen was impressed.

“It just felt right,” Christiansen said.

One of the many things that made OSU feel like home was the coaching staff, which assured him they had his best interests at heart and would seek to support him in his goals.

Christiansen’s decision to join OSU is another testament to the type of program WWCC has built throughout the years and the experience of wrestling as a Mustang is something he will never forget.

“I owe everything to the coaches and my teammates at Western. From the very first day I got there I could tell there was a real family-type atmosphere. Coach Castillo gave me a chance when I didn’t have any other opportunities. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Christiansen said.

Of the many memories he made with the Mustangs, his favorite is the moment the team crowned ten All-Americans at the National Championships.

“It was a really fulfilling moment knowing all of our hard work had paid off and people were finally getting to see what we’re doing at Western Wyoming,” Christiansen said.

Christiansen will head to OSU with the same goals he had as a Mustang to be crowned as a national champion. He added that he’s also looking forward to working towards being a leader on the team and giving it his all to his new squad.
