Mustangs Win District Title; Qualify 10 for NJCAA Wrestling Championships

ROCK SPRINGS — Ten Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) wrestlers punched their ticket to the 2021 NJCAA Wrestling Championships over the weekend during the Rocky Mountain District Championships.

The Mustangs held the championship matches against Northeastern Junior College (NJC) on Saturday, with the expectation to send all 10 wrestlers to the national tournament later this month in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Those expectations were met.

Western won every championship match, totaling 125 team points and the Rocky Mountain District title. Anthony Herrera was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament and Head Coach Art Castillo was named the Rocky Mountain District Coach of the Year.

125: Garrett Ricks (WWCC) over Colter Julian (NJC) Major Decision 13-1. Ricks wins championship.

133: Destin Summers (WWCC) over Stephen Standridge (NJC) Technical Fall 15-0. Summers wins championship.

141: Caleb Nathan (WWCC) over Daryn Castilleja (NJC) Fall 1:25. Nathan wins championship.

149: Cameron Metcalf (WWCC) over Abel Ambriz (NJC) Fall 2:37. Metcalf wins championship.

157: Anthony Herrera (WWCC) over Tab Smith (NJC) Technical Fall 16-1. Herrera wins championship.

165: Collin Smith (WWCC) over Connor Davis (NJC) Fall 3:33. Smith wins championship.

174: Mason Christiansen (WWCC) over Kyle Thurin (NJC) Fall 2:28. Christiansen wins championship.

184: Andrew Nicholson (WWCC) over Karson Bean (NJC) Fall 3:44. Nicholson wins championship.

197: Tyler Scheurn (WWCC) over Gabriel Garcia (NJC) Fall 0:35. Scheurn wins championship.

285: Wyatt Kearn (WWCC) over Bye (NJC). Kearn wins championship.

Off for Nationals

Western will once again send a full team to the national tournament. This is the third straight year the team has sent a full team to nationals and the goal to come back with a national title remains the same.

The Mustangs will compete at the national tournament on April 21-22 at the Mid-America Center.
