ROCK SPRINGS — Alex Duran a WWCC student received a $2,000 scholarship from the Rock Springs Rotary Club on Tuesday at the September 15th meeting of the Rock Springs Rotary Club. WWCC President Karla Leach also gave an update about the college to the club members in attendance.
Changes on Campus
Leach said that Western is moving into its 56th year and has many projects on the horizon including the creation of a new green space that will be known as Western Commons.
The project will take the place of a large thermal energy system currently installed on the campus. Leach said the green energy system installed in the 1980’s was forward thinking but is ending its useful life span and will be replaced by a partially sheltered commons.
Completed projects include Mustang Central and many other recent improvements to the campus.
Night Classes
Leach gave an update on the Western After Hours program which provides opportunities to take classes in the evening hours. She also answered questions about auditing classes.
Nursing Accreditation
Leach told the rotarians that the College’s Nursing Program is now accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing after several years of preparation.
16 to Succeed
Leach said 48 students have completed their degrees and met the requirements of the 16 to Succeed program and were awarded $1,000 for their efforts.
Vietnam Moving Wall
Leach was especially proud that this June WWCC hosted the Vietnam War Moving Wall. The exact replica of the original in Washington, D.C. was brought to Rock Springs to coincide with he state convention of the American Legion. During the three day stay on campus an estimated 10,000 people stopped at the memorial.
