Rock Springs Tigers claim first victory of the season

ROCK SPRINGS – Take a look outside and it’s white as far as you can see. While some people cuss the snow others shout its football weather. The Rock Springs Tigers were able to outlast the snow and the Evanston Red Devils to get the first win of the year, 15-7.

Even with a blanket of snow covering the field and personnel trying to keep the field clear, both teams came out very even in the first half. Rock Springs did control the time of possession in the first half but at halftime the score was even, 7-7.

Garrett McGaha and Kolten Legerski did not seemed to have trouble in the snow.  McGaha ran for 57 yards and Legerski scampered for 71 yards. The Tigers had several strong drives but as they got close to the end zone, the offense stalled.

The Red Devils got the ball to start the second half but Rock Springs took over on downs. The Tigers kept the ball on the ground on their first possession but were forced to punt right back to Evanston. Just a few plays later Rock Springs took the ball back after McGaha recovered an Evanston fumble around mid-field. Two penalties moved the Tigers back 15 yards and Rock Spring punted right back to Evanston.

The snow seemed to be playing its own game as both offenses struggled to get going and traded punts to start the final quarter. The Tigers went to the ground to try and spark their offense. McGaha broke for a long run to move the ball just outside the redzone.

Legerski played off the McGaha run and faked a hand off to him. The Red Devil defense bit and Legerski sprinted to the outside and found a clear path to the end zone and the lead. Rock Springs had trouble on the extra point but recovered and was able to score a two-point conversion on the busted play.

With Evanston down 15-7, a huge Red Devil return on the following kick-off put them in a position to even up the score. The Tiger defense held strong and Nick Blume ended the Evanston drive by picking off a pass in the end zone with four minutes to go.

McGaha continued to run wild as he broke a 15-yard run to get to mid-field. A 20-yard Legerski run moved the ball into Evanston territory as the clock continued to run. Legerski then plowed his way to another first down which allowed the Tigers to run out the clock and grab the first victory of the season.
