SUBLETTE COUNTY — Today the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reported receiving a call from a resident who said a scammer texted them pretending to be one of their friends to try and obtain gift cards. The scammer spoofed the number to pose as the friend.
According to a press release from the SCSO, “the ‘friend’ asked this person to purchase about $400 worth of Google Play cards. Upon further conversation with his friend in person, it was discovered it was not the friend requesting. A scammer had spoofed the number and texted posing to be the friend and requesting the cards.”
“If you receive odd texts like this from your contacts, please reach out to them via phone call to verify its legitimacy and avoid being scammed for hundreds of dollars,” the SCSO stated.
Scammers have been spoofing local numbers more in recent months. The SCSO is encouraging residents to always verify the person is who they say they are before you fall victim to a scam.
