GREEN RIVER — Sweetwater County school District No. 2 Board of Trustees Tuesday night approved on first reading a new firearm policy designed to comply with the states gun free zone legislation enacted this session.

State Representative Marlene Brady told the board there is state funding available for the training required for teachers to obtain a conceal carry permit. She informed the board there is a national Teacher Training Day for firearms June 21. She also asked the board that something stronger and stricter than lock boxes be utilized when personnel are storing their firearms on campus. The proposed policy would allow district staff and volunteers to carry a firearm.

The policy was brought about through House Bill 172. HB 172 made Wyoming the fifth state to have no gun-free zones. The State Legislature decided that school boards and local districts would be in charge of their firearm policies.
