SWEETWATER COUNTY — You may have wondered if you were seeing things…  the answer is no, there really is a solitary bull bison roaming the desert. It was recently reported that the bison has been seen near the Black Butte Coal Mine.

Well, what is it doing here?

Turns out it is not a natural migration, instead the bull escaped from a ranch near Rawlins ten days ago.

The Wyoming Game and Fish said that since the animal is livestock it isn’t managed by them, “It is private property, we don’t have anything to do with it,” explained  Lucy Diggins with Game and Fish.

Since the animal is private property and not a game animal it is obviously off limits to hunting and you might want to keep your distance for personal safety.

Officials at Black Butte said they couldn’t comment on the sighting.

Jan Erickson shared this photo of the bull bison down by Highway 430.
