Sweetwater County is set to receive its first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 Coronavirus vaccine next week, of which healthcare workers will receive the first doses.

Of the first set of Pfizer vaccines being shipped out across the United States, Wyoming is receiving about 5,000 doses. The Moderna vaccine was approved by a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel, and is expected to receive a full approval from the FDA possibly by as soon as the end of the day.

Moderna has claimed an efficacy rate of 94.1 percent of their vaccine, while Pfizer has claimed 95 percent efficacy of their drug, which was approved by the FDA last week.

If the Moderna vaccine receives its approval, as it is expected to, more doses could be on its way to Wyoming before the end of the year. The Washington Post reported that Wyoming could receive a total of 26,000 doses by 2021.

Both vaccines require a follow-up shot approximately three to four weeks after the first vaccination.

Nursing home residents and workers are the other group included among healthcare workers to receive the vaccine first. Wyoming has approximately 22,000 healthcare workers and 6,200 nursing home residents and workers, according to the Washington Post.

Next in line for the vaccine are essential workers, teachers, and first responders. Then will be people with pre-existing conditions and people who are 65 years of age or older.

Only then will the vaccine be available to the general public, which could be until spring or even summer 2021.
