Tigers pin South on Tuesday in Rawlins; Regionals start Feb. 20 in Rock Springs

ROCK SPRINGS – After a couple of close losses at the conference duals, the Rock Springs wrestlers bounced back to beat Cheyenne South in Rawlins on Tuesday.

Before the teams even took the mat, South took a 12-point lead with Rock Springs forfeiting five matches and South forfeiting three. Wyatt Martinez, Slade Pitt and John Nowland all won by forfeit.

Competing at 126, Tiger Patrick Debaun got things started. He was able to score a quick fall at the 0:49 mark of the match. At 138, Ira Dickinson followed suit with a win by pin at the 3:56 mark. It was William Petrovich’s turn at 145 and he followed the first two with another first period pin. He was able to get the best of South’s David Clarke at the 0:54 mark of the match.

At 160, Tiger Dawson Lorenz scored a win due to injury. The final win came from Trevor Ryan who made quick work of his opponent with another first period pin at the 0:45 mark.

The Tigers lost three duals over the weekend with two close battles. Riverton was able to get a six-point win, 42-36 and Kelly Walsh was able to hold on to get a 48-26 win over the Tigers. The third dual was against Natrona who controlled throughout with a 66-12 win.

Although Riverton was able to take the win, the Tigers had a strong performance. Riverton scored 18 points on forfeits by Rock Springs which was really the difference of the match. Tiger’s Christian Fennewald, Trevor Ryan, Danny Macy, Mason Randall, Teno Trujillo and Brayden Stassinos all scored wins by fall against Riverton.

In the Kelly Walsh match, the Trojans had three open classes while Rock Springs forfeited four divisions. Petrovich, Ryan and Pitt all scored wins by forfeit.

John Nowland and Mason Randall were the Tigers who scored wins against Kelly Walsh. Nowland won a close 5-2 decision while Randall won by a technical fall, 22-7.

Against Natrona, Ryan and Martinez scored wins for Rock Springs. Both came by way of the pin.

Rock Springs will be in Riverton this weekend competing in a two-day tournament. Rock Springs hosts this year’s Regional Tournament which starts Feb. 20.
