GILLETTE — The Rock Springs Tigers’ playoff hopes came to an end Friday night with a 30-10 loss to Campbell County, leaving the Tigers with one game remaining in the regular season.
Rock Springs entered the matchup needing a win to remain in contention for one of the eight playoff spots available among Wyoming’s 10 Class 4A teams. A victory would have moved the Tigers and Camels to two wins apiece, giving Rock Springs a path to the postseason depending on the final week’s results. Instead, Campbell County improved its record and clinched a playoff berth while eliminating the Tigers from contention.
The first half was a defensive battle, with neither team scoring in the opening quarter. Rock Springs struck first early in the second when Alex Galvan connected on a 27-yard field goal less than a minute into the period to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Campbell County answered with a rushing touchdown from Jenovich Gray, who broke loose for a 29-yard score to put the Camels ahead 7-3 with 8:42 remaining in the half. Rock Springs threw an interception on its ensuing possession, but neither team scored again before halftime.
The Camels extended their lead early in the third quarter when quarterback Drew Wasson connected with Tayvin Anderson for a 29-yard touchdown. Anderson’s reception was just his second of the season, and the score gave Campbell County a 14-3 advantage with 8:48 left in the period.
The Tigers responded with one of their best drives of the night. Rock Springs moved the ball downfield before junior quarterback Max Gard finished the possession with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point cut the deficit to 14-10 with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter.
The momentum did not last long, however. Gray scored his second rushing touchdown of the game with 3:39 remaining in the third, this time from 8 yards out, pushing Campbell County’s lead to 21-10.
The Camels added to their advantage in the fourth quarter with a 25-yard field goal to make it 24-10 with just over eight minutes remaining. Rock Springs needed a scoring drive to stay within reach, but Campbell County’s defense delivered the decisive play.
Facing fourth-and-4 at their own 45-yard line, Rock Springs attempted a pass to the right side. Gard’s throw carried too much air, allowing junior Kohen Mettler to read the play and intercept it for a defensive touchdown with just under six minutes remaining. The Tigers blocked the extra point, leaving the score at 30-10 with 5:45 left.
Campbell County intercepted another pass on Rock Springs’ next possession, recording its third interception of the game and shutting down the Tigers’ opportunity to rally. The Camels held on for the 20-point victory to secure their place in the postseason.
Campbell County finished with 313 total yards, rushing 36 times for 151 yards and completing enough passes to account for 162 passing yards on 15 attempts. The Camels did not commit a turnover. Tate Reed led the ground game with season highs of 18 carries and 83 yards, while Gray added 64 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Mettler led the receiving corps with five catches for 63 yards, while Karsen Lewis had a 44-yard reception and Anderson finished with the 29-yard touchdown catch.
Rock Springs ran the ball 41 times for 211 yards but struggled to protect possession, turning the ball over four times. The Tigers attempted 13 passes, their highest total since throwing 18 times in the season opener against Sheridan. It was only the third game this season in which Rock Springs attempted double-digit passes and the first with Gard starting at quarterback. He completed six passes for 54 yards.
Kaleb Praytor led the Tigers with 73 rushing yards on 13 carries, followed by Jernee Padilla with 56 yards on 11 attempts. Ezra Horgen added 46 yards on seven carries, while Gard finished with 36 rushing yards and the Tigers’ lone touchdown. Horgen and Praytor were the only Rock Springs players with receptions, each catching three passes. Horgen finished with 40 receiving yards, while Praytor added 14. Their combined rushing and receiving production gave Horgen 86 total yards and Praytor 87.
The loss ends Rock Springs’ chance to reach the playoffs, but the Tigers still have one game remaining to close out the season. They will return home next week to face undefeated Natrona County, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A, in their regular-season finale.
