Brunette and Derner Run Top 10k Times in MW

SAN FRANCISCO – Wyoming track and field’s Megan Brunette and Aaron Derner ran the fastest 10,000-meter times in the Mountain West this season on Friday at San Francisco State’s Distance Carnival.

Brunette, a junior, crossed the finish line in 35:21.58 to set a new personal best by four seconds and place third in the field of 52 runners. The time keeps her third in Cowgirl history in the event, while ranking first in the conference, first in the west region and 14thin the NCAA entering Friday.

Derner, a senior, finished in 30:03.35 for 12th in the 93-man field. His time was 15 seconds shy of his personal best of 29:48, which ranks 10th in Cowboy history. His time is currently first in the conference, second in the west region and 24th in the NCAA entering Friday.

Wyoming’s full squads compete at the Tom Benich Invite on Saturday in Greeley, Colo. Field events begin at 9 a.m. MT with running events at 11:50 a.m. Fans can follow live results and live video through GoWYO.com.

 

 

 

 

 

UW Tennis Begins MW with Win over Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Wyoming tennis team (8-9 overall, 1-0 MW) snapped a five-match losing streak and opened up the 2016 conference season with a 7-0 sweep of the Air Force Falcons (9-8, 0-1 MW) on Friday afternoon.

 “Conference wins are always good wins,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “The ladies came out with a lot of fire and played with purpose today. The upperclassmen led the way for us in singles. We talked about having everybody playing on the same day and we were able to accomplish that.”

 In doubles play, Wyoming took the early 1-0 lead. The pair of Magdalena Stencel and Nastya Tokareva defeated Chloe Forlini and Jocelle Rudico, 6-1, while the duo of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg won the point with a 6-3 win over Mary Meyers and Elisa Nelson.

 The Cowgirls continued its momentum in singles play by sweeping all six matches. Koonik won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 over Lily Forlini followed by Stencel with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Chloe Forlini. At the number two position, Tokareva beat her opponent, 7-6, 6-1, while Dorottya Jonas clinched the match for UW with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Elizabeth Barnickel. In the final two matches of the day, van Der Ploeg defeated Rudico, 6-4, 6-4 followed by Miranda Talbert who needed three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8, over Meredith Laskey.

 Wyoming will continue league play on Sunday against the 45th ranked New Mexico Lobos. The match is set for 3 p.m. MT in Albuquerque.

UW Men’s Golf to Host 14th Cowboy Classic

LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming men’s golf team is set to host the 14th annual Cowboy Classic at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.

The event will play 54-holes over two days with two 18-hole rounds on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday. The Contestants will be playing par-72, 7,334 yard Cattail Course. Each morning will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT.

“This is an exciting event with a great field of competitors,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “Being able to golf at such a nice facility is truly a great honor and we are happy to host the Cowboy Classic for 14-consecutive years.”

This season’s field will feature 19 teams: Wyoming, Air Force, Arizona, Colorado, CSU-Northridge, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist, Idaho, Sam Houston State, William & Mary, San Francisco, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah State, UC Santa Barbara, Western Kentucky, Wichita State and Weber State.

During last season’s event, the Cowboys finished 14th in the 18-team field with a total score of 870 (+6). Drew McCullough was the top finisher at last year’s event with a 215 (-1), tying for 33rd. The sophomore is leading the Pokes this spring, averaging 71.9 strokes per round. His best finish of fourth place came at the Arizona National Invitational Tournament. Senior Kamrin Allen leads Wyoming in the overall stroke average at 72.5 per round. He also leads the team with eight top-30 finishes this season.

This will be the last tournament that Wyoming will host this season. Their next tournament will be the BYU Cougar Classic on April 11-12.
