Wyoming Tennis Falls Short against UNLV

FT. COLLINS, Colo. – The Wyoming tennis team (11-12 overall, 3-2 MW) had its season ended on Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Mountain West Championship with a 4-3 loss against the 72nd ranked UNLV Lady Rebels.

The Cowgirls got off to a quick start in the match by winning two of three doubles matches. The team of Magdalena Stencel and Nastya Tokareva dropped their match 6-3 against Carol Yang and Aiwen Zhu. The freshmen combination of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg beat Anna Bogoslavets and Cristina Moroi, 6-4, followed by the duo of Dorottya Jonas and Miranda Talbert over Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga, 6-4, to give UW a 1-0 advantage.

In singles action, it looked like it was going to be quick work for the Lady Rebels as they won all four opening sets. Zhu gave UNLV its first point with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Jonas. At the number three spot, Bogoslavets needed three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 against Tokareva. It was a real battle for the 96th ranked Yang and Stencel at the first position. Yang opened up the match with a 6-3 first set win which was answered by Stencel with a 6-2 victory in the second set.

It went back and forth with Stencel pulling it out 7-6 (7-3) in the tiebreaker to even up the match at two all. Koonik battled in her match with Artiga splitting the first two sets, 7-5, but fell short in the third, 6-4, giving UNLV the upper hand 3-2.

The Cowgirls rallied back with a 6-2, 7-5 victory from Sanne Hoekstra over Moroi. It would all come down to the final match of the day between van Der Ploeg and Koseva. UNLV won the opening set 7-5. Unfortunately van Der Ploeg wouldn’t have enough left in the tank as Koseva won the second set 6-3 to give the Lady Rebels a 4-3 victory.

Wyoming ends the season with an 11-12 overall mark and 3-2 in Mountain West play.

Jensen Named MW Coach of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  – University of Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen has been named the 2015-16 Mountain West Men’s Golf Coach of the Year, as announced Thursday by the league office.

It is the first MW Coach of the Year accolade for Jensen. Now in his 14th season, Jensen has directed the Cowboys through an impressive campaign, highlighted by finishing in the top-five in eight of the eleven tournaments played.

“First and foremost, I have to give credit to this year’s team that I am very fortunate to work with,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “There is no doubt they had a great year. Everyone in the athletic department has helped us and been great along the way. We wanted to finish a little better than we did, but nonetheless we still had a great year. Lastly, it truly means a lot. I am so grateful for the other coaches to nominate me and to recognize our program.”

UW’s sixth-place finish at this year’s MW Championships was its best since the Pokes took sixth in 2005. Sophomore Drew McCullough became just the seventh Cowboy to finish in the top-ten in the 17 years UW has competed in the MW Championship, and on April 6, Jensen helped junior Ryan Wallen become the first MW Golfer of the Week since David Hearn earned the award on April 20, 2000.

The men’s golf team was one of two teams at Wyoming to post a perfect APR score of 1,000, as the NCAA released its annual data last week. It marked the fourth consecutive reporting period that the Cowboy golf team recorded a perfect score based on its four-year average.

Under Jensen’s guidance, Wyoming golfers have garnered 11 all-conference accolades and ten Academic All-American honors. He has also directed Mike Urbatchka and Gabe Maier to NCAA Regional Tournament appearances.

Jensen was a member of the Cowboy golf team during the 1992-93 season, turned professional in 1993, and became an assistant golf pro at the Jacoby Golf Club. He earned his bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences from the University of Wyoming in 1998 and completed his MBA at UW in December of 2006. Jensen was hired as the Cowboy golf coach on Dec. 7, 2001 and named Director of Wyoming Golf on Aug. 18, 2005.

Harms and Cloetta Finalist for Top UW Award

LARAMIE – A graduating Cowboy and Cowgirl were honored with one of the University of Wyoming’s top accolades on Friday. Senior wrestler Tanner Harms was named finalist for the Tobin Memorial, while senior track and field athlete Catherine Cloetta earned the same for the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award.

The annual Tobin award is based on academic excellence and achievement, service to the university, participation and leadership in the community and campus activities, and citizenship qualities and is given to UW’s outstanding graduating man. To be considered for Tobin award, students were judged on academic excellence and achievement; contributions and service to UW; participation and leadership in co-curricular activities; and demonstrated character and citizenship.

The Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award, established in 1964, annually recognizes the outstanding graduating woman at UW for exhibiting the finest leadership, academic integrity and citizenship qualities.

Vikram Singh, of Bangalore, India, an astronomy and astrophysics major won the Tobin Award. Kimberly Sanchez, of Cheyenne, an anthropology and Russian major was this year’s Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award recipient.

Nominators wrote letters of support for each of the students.

A native of Greenwood, Village, Colo., Harms was a member of the UW wrestling team the past five seasons. Harms was a two-time NCAA Qualifier and finished his senior season with a 22-6 record helping the Pokes’ to their highest finish at the NCAA Championship in 20 years. He was also the first finalist for the Cowboys to wrestle in the Big 12 Championship. Earlier this month he was named Scholar Athlete of the Year by the Big 12 Conference. He is graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering.

A native of Jackson, Wyo., Cloetta has been a member of the Wyoming track and field and cross country programs the last three seasons. On the track she broke into the Cowgirls’ all-time top 10 in the steeplechase last season and this season ran the fourth-fastest time in program history with a personal-best 11:00.77 on April 9. In the classroom, Cloetta has been named a MW Scholar Athlete twice. She will earn degrees in physiology and chemistry.

The winners and finalists of the awards were honored during a luncheon in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center on Friday.
