Wyoming Outlasts Air Force in Five Sets
Record 20th win of the season
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Bridget Shanahan had a season-high 19 kills to lead the University of Wyoming to a 3-2 win over Air Force in Mountain West action Saturday afternoon.
The win marked the fourth-straight season Wyoming has won at least 20 matches. UW (20-6, 10-4 MW) has now won five straight against the Falcons (11-17, 4-9 MW) and 23 of the last 24 matches dating back to the 2004 season.
Wyoming tied its season-high with 62 total kills Saturday afternoon against Air Force. The only other time UW had 62 kills was against Marquette during Pistol Pete’s Showdown earlier this year in September. It was also the first time this season the Cowgirls passed out 60 assists. The season’s previous high was 58, which came against New Mexico on Thursday night.
Courtney Chacon recorded the lone double-double with a season-high 31 assists and 10 digs for the Brown and Gold. It was her second-consecutive and eighth overall on the season. She also became the third Cowgirl to dish out at least 30 assists in a match. Allison Waldvogel led all players with 19 digs, while Kayla Slofkiss was the third Cowgirl to have double-figure digs with 16 on the afternoon.
Laura Beach chipped in 13 kills and four blocks for UW, as Kayla Henderson also had four roofs in addition to nine kills against the Falcons. After recording a career-high on Thursday night, Slofkiss followed up with seven kills against Air Force. She and Lily Austin each tied their season-high with three service aces as well.
For the 19th time this season, freshman Reed Copeland led the Cowgirls with a match-high seven blocks. She also had a solid afternoon on the offensive end with seven kills. Fellow freshman Mattison DeGarmo swatted seven kills, to go along with two roofs. Cori Aafedt dished out 22 assists, as well as eight digs for UW.
Shanahan swatted six kills in the first set for the Cowgirls, as Waldvogel did the defensive work with five digs. Henderson and Shanahan each had three kills in the second frame, before Beach, Shanahan and Copeland blistered three after the intermission. Beach had four in the fourth and her last three in the fifth and final set to help UW seal out its 20th victory.
The Cowgirls are back in action against San Jose State (13-14, 5-9 MW) in a Saturday evening tilt. The match will begin at 6:30 p.m. MT in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Shanahan Eclipses 1,000 Kills as UW Moves Past New Mexico in Five
Slofkiss, DeGarmo also have career night
Albuquerque, N.M. – Â Senior Bridget Shanahan became the 12th Cowgirl in school history to record at least 1,000 career kills, while Kayla Slofkiss and Mattison DeGarmo posted career-highs in kills to guide UW past New Mexico on Thursday night. Wyoming came away with a five-set win 3-2 (14-25, 25-21, 25-20, 18-25, 15-7) for its third-consecutive victory.
Wyoming finished with 61 kills on the evening, which proved to be the fourth time this season it had at least 60 kills during a match. Slofkiss lead the team with her 19 kills and was one of four Cowgirls in double-digits.
For the first time in her career, DeGarmo finished a match with double-digit kills. She added ten for UW, while Kayla Henderson chipped in 11. Laura Beach had a solid night also recording ten kills for Wyoming. Shanahan finished with eight kills and moved into 12th place on the all-time list for Wyoming with 1,003 career kills.
Allison Waldvogel had her first double-double of the year, as Courtney Chacon recorded her seventh for the Cowgirls. Waldvogel had a team-high 27 digs in addition to 12 assists, while Chacon lead UW with 24 assists, to go along 16 digs.
Cori Aafedt dished out 22 assists for the Cowgirls and also scooped up seven digs. Wyoming tied its season-high with 58 total assists and recorded its second-best total team digs with 76 total against the Lobos.
Freshman Reed Copeland had a match-high six blocks for the Cowgirls. Beach and Slofkiss each added four against New Mexico. Sophomore Lily Austin had eight digs on the evening, while Slofkiss brought in seven.
Waldvogel had four digs in the first set against the Lobos, as Slofkiss swatted three kills. She added six kills in the second frame, while Beach chipped in four. Slofkiss once again had six kills in the third set in addition to four digs. Waldvogel lead UW with six digs in the fourth set before recording nine in the final frame.
