A family is okay today after a structure fire in Farson started around 6 p.m. last night.

At around 6:00 PM on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, Sweetwater Combined Communications Center received report of a single-family residential structure fire off State Highway 28 in Farson, Wyoming.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with emergency first responders from the Eden-Farson Fire District, Sweetwater County Fire Department, Sweetwater County Fire District #1 and the Eden Valley Ambulance Service, responded to the scene and found heavy smoke and open flames engulfed the house.

Firefighters immediately began suppression efforts, quickly gaining control of the fire by approximately 6:30 PM.Investigators learned the property belonged to Sweetwater County School District #1 and was home to a local schoolteacher and his family. A pregnant woman and three small children were inside of the house at the time of the fire.

All four people safely evacuated from the home before first responders arrived to the scene.

Medics evaluated the children for smoke inhalation, and transported the woman to the hospital for possible evaluation as a precaution. While neither the woman nor the children sustained any significant physical injury, a family pet was lost to the fire.

Although rescuers successfully salvaged some of the family’s personal belongings and heirlooms, the structure itself suffered substantial fire, smoke and water damage and is presumed a total loss.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation, but does not appear suspicious and is likely related to the use of a heavy-duty space heater to unfreeze some piping underneath the house.
