#WHYoming: Lauren Schoenfeld

#WHYoming: Lauren Schoenfeld

Welcome to our series, #WHYoming, brought to you in partnership by Kaumo Law.

We are highlighting people from around our communities and asking them a few questions. We want to learn a little about them and see why they chose this great state to raise their families, start their businesses, or simply to ask — Why Wyoming?

This week, I had a chance to talk with Lauren Schoenfeld, the Senior Human Resources Administrator at J.R. Simplot Company. Lauren began working at Simplot in November 2018. Prior to working at Simplot, Lauren was the Executive Director at the YWCA of Sweetwater County for six years.

In addition to working at Simplot, Lauren is a member of the Rock Springs Planning and Zoning Commission, the Joint Powers Fiber Optics Telecom Board, the Wyoming Broadband Advisory Council, the YWCA Global Relations Committee, the YWCA World Council Board, and the Wyoming Community Foundation Sweetwater County Board.

Lauren is very active in the community, as she truly loves Sweetwater County. Growing up in Farson, and raising her children in Rock Springs, there’s no where else she would rather live.

This community series is brought to you by:

Lauren, what do you enjoy about working at Simplot?

Simplot is a great company to work for! So far I have enjoyed getting to know the employees, learning about the company, and having the opportunity to support our community.

How did you end up in Rock Springs?

My mother grew up in Rock Springs and met my father while attending WWCC. They returned to our community after college and lived in Farson, which is where I grew up. I returned to Rock Springs after graduating from the University of Wyoming and a brief stint in California.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy cooking, running, home improvement projects, interior decorating, gardening and yardwork.

What do you appreciate most about our community?

The people! Sweetwater County is an incredible place to live and work! In my view, Sweetwater County is unlike anywhere else because of the incredible innovation, dedication, and perseverance of our residents. We solve problems; we work together to fill gaps in services, and collectively we strongly support our local community and businesses.

If you could give one brief piece of advice, what would it be?

No matter your age, always push yourself to grow and improve! Some of the greatest opportunities that I have had stemmed from change.

Where is your favorite place to hang out in Sweetwater County?

My backyard during the summertime just before sunset. My family enjoys the beautiful view over White Mountain in the comfort of our backyard with a lovely warm Wyoming summer evening.

Would you rather walk, ride a bike, take a horse, or drive a car?

It depends on the weather, the distance needing to travel, and the time available. I would rather walk/run with my dogs.

What would you sing at karaoke night?

Even though my Associate Degree is in theatre and dance performance with an emphasis in vocal music performance, I would not sing at karaoke night.

How would your friends describe you?

My friends described me (yes, I asked them) as being motivated, kind, enthusiastic, passionate, driven, trustworthy and respectful.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments?

I am very proud of the opportunity that I had to be a Delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 62. I was also asked to speak at a parallel event during the Commission about Bridging the Gap from Urban to Rural Communities by using Technology. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that gave me the chance to represent rural Wyoming on a global level and allowed me to grow and learn.

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?

I would like my daughter, Letty, to play me in a movie. I am so proud to be her mommy and I am very excited to help her learn and grow into a successful and happy young woman.

Why do you continue to live in Wyoming?

Wyoming has given me and my family incredible opportunity. We have been blessed to call Sweetwater County our home and truly enjoy the community we live in.

We are so lucky to have the access to hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and off-roading like we do! My husband and I love our careers and are excited to continue to live, work, play, and give back in this awesome area!
