CHEYENNE – The Green River Wolves made a late push against Cheyenne South but came up short in its return to action, 58-49.
Gavin Heiser paced the Wolves in their return as he finished with 12 points, all coming behind the three-point line. Devin Love finished with 11 while Chase Stoeger finished with nine.
South led from the start as both teams struggled from the field. Strong defense and physical play by both teams kept the score low for the entire first half. Love had three points early and a three pointer by Stoeger had the Wolves within two early. At the end of the first, the Bison held a three-point advantage, 12-9.
Both teams were able to find the basket a little more in the second quarter as South maintained a three-point lead, 19-16. The Bison scored five straight to go up eight but Green River was able to cut it back to six by the half, 27-21. Stoeger finished the first half with seven points, four coming in the second quarter. Jake Angelovich scored four while Love and Heiser each added three.
Both teams struggled out of the break as the only points for the first three minutes came on a Heiser three. South finally found the range and used to 11-2 run to open up a double-digit advantage, Hunter Spartz ended the run with 20 seconds left in the third as the Bison took a 38-28 lead going into the final period.
The teams went back and forth to start the fourth. A Love three had Green River within seven, 46-39 with around five minutes left. After a South bucket, Heiser hit from downtown and another bucket by Spartz had the Wolves within five, 49-44. South missed several free throws in the final three minutes but Green River was unable to take advantage. With 20 seconds left, the Wolves sent South to the line with a six-point lead, 55-49. South missed again but Green River forgot to box out on the board. The Bisons grabbed the board and put it in for two to ice the game.
The Wolves will look to get back in the win column on Saturday as they travel to Laramie. The Plainsmen lost by double-digits to Rock Springs on Friday.
