Wolves Remain Unbeaten as Rivalry Games go to Green River

GREEN RIVER — Green River protected its home field Tuesday, sweeping Sweetwater County rival Rock Springs in both matches as the Wolves remained unbeaten and the Lady Wolves continued their strong start to the season.

The Lady Wolves earned a 6-2 victory to improve to 3-1, while the Wolves followed with a late 2-1 win to move to 4-0. Rock Springs fell to 2-2 in both matches and remains in search of its first road win of the season.

In the girls match, Green River struck first in the ninth minute when Marely Magaña found the net to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Rock Springs responded late in the first half, as Tahlia Knudsen scored in the 36th minute to even the match at 1-1. The tie was short-lived.

Isa Vasco quickly took control, scoring in the 38th and 39th minutes to push Green River ahead 3-1 heading into halftime.

The Lady Wolves continued to build on their lead early in the second half, as Brookelyn Phillips scored in the 43rd minute to make it 4-1.

Rock Springs answered in the 69th minute, with Izzy Gibbons assisting Knudsen for her second goal of the match to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Green River pulled away late behind Vasco, who scored again in the 75th minute and added another just a minute later to complete a four-goal performance and secure the 6-2 win.

In the boys match, the two teams battled through a tightly contested, physical game that remained scoreless into the second half.

Green River broke through first, as Dax Taylor scored in the 50th minute to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers answered in the 69th minute when Ethan Brewster found the net to tie the match at 1-1, setting up a tense finish.

With just four minutes remaining, Gavin Mares delivered the decisive moment, scoring to give Green River a 2-1 lead.

The Wolves held on defensively over the final minutes to secure the win and remain undefeated on the season.

With the sweep, Green River continues to build momentum early in the year, while Rock Springs will look to regroup and break through on the road as the season progresses.
