GILLETTE = The regional champion Green River Wolves sit in fourth after the first day of the 2016 Wyoming Tennis State Championships.

The defending champion Gillette Camels are first with 15 points. Cody is second with 1o points followed by Cheyenne Central in third with 9.5. The Wolves scored 8.5 points of the first day to finish in fourth. The doubles teams of Gregory and Patrick Marchal and Andrew Halverson and Cody Lee still have state title hopes alive.

Boys No. 1 Singles

Jacob Lock opened with a win over Cody’s Zach Ross, 6-2, 6-3. In the quarters, Lock lost to Gillette’s Dawson Miessler in straight sets. He will face Luke Macy of Cheyenne East to start play on Friday.

Boys No. 2 Singles

Brendan Bloomquist lost in his opening match to Cody’s Joe Luedde, 6-1 and 6-2. He rebounded in the consolation bracket to advance with a win over Cheyenne South’s Wyatt Ebben, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2. He will face Sheridan’s Ethan Kutz on Friday.

No. 1 Doubles

Green Rivers’ Patrick and Gregory Marchal received a bye in the first round. They faced Sheridan’s Gustafson/Rogaczewski who won their first match over Torrington, 6-2, 6-1. The Marchals used a late break to win the first set, 7-5 and cruised in the second, 6-1. They will face the team from Cody in the semifinals on Friday.

No. 2 Doubles

Andrew Halverson and Cody Lee opened strong with a 6-0, 6-2 win over the team from Cheyenne East. In the quarters, the Wolves continued their strong play against Natrona’s Vandervoort/Busch. They moved into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Halverson and Lee will face Cody of Friday for a shot at a state championship.

No. 3 Doubles

Green River’s Karsyn Beutel and Josh Graves opened with a straight-sets win over Kelly Walsh, 6-3 and 6-2. Up next was Gillette’s Neary and Bradley who beat Torrington in round one, 6-2 and 6-0. Beutel and Graves came up just short in a competitive match, 6-3 and 6-3. They will open play on Friday against the team from Powell.
