GREEN RIVER – With racquets in hand, the Green River tennis squads returned to the courts over the weekend as high school tennis got underway. The Wolves battled hard but lost in two close matches.

The Wolves opened the season at home as they faced the Powell Panthers on Friday. Green River was able to get a win in singles and a win in doubles but dropped the season opener in a close 3-2 score.

In the No. 1 singles match, Green River’s Alexander Marchal faced off against Powell’s Cody Akin. Akin controlled the match as he took the win over Marchal in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2. In the No. 2 singles matchup, the Wolves Taten Knight squared off against Sterling Cozzens. It was all Knight as he took the match in two, 6-1 and 6-1.

Switching to doubles, Jacob Lock and Brandon Lee represented Green River in the No. 1 doubles match. The Panthers came out strong and handed Lock and Lee the loss in two, 6-3 and 6-3. In the No. 2 doubles, Green River’s McCaden Mikesell and Adrun James took Powell to a third and deciding game. Mikesell and James won a close first game, 6-4, but got slapped in the second as Powell won 6-0. Mikesell and James bounced back after the rough second game and was able to take the win by a score of 6-3 in the final game.

In No. 3 doubles, Green River hit the court with Cody Lee and Brenden Bloomquist. The Wolves were able to take Powell in the first set 6-3 but Powell came right back to take the second 6-2. In the deciding set, it was close throughout as Powell was able to take the win, 6-4.

On Saturday, the boy’s returned to the court, this time to face Cody. It was another close match for the Wolves as Cody was able to squeak by winning three of the five matches.

Taten Knight moved into the No. 1 singles match for the Wolves and it the closest match all weekend, Cody’s Zach Ross prevailed. Ross controlled the first set 6-2 but Knight came back in the second to even the match 7-5. It went right down to the end in the third set as Ross took a late lead and held on, 7-6. After losing on Friday, Marchal returned to the court and was determined right from the start taking the first set 6-3, Cody was able to even the match with a win in the second, 6-2, but a determined Marchal would not be denied, winning the final set, 6-2 for the match win.

Lock and Mikesell took the court in the No. 1 doubles match coming off a Friday win. While the Friday win was close going to three games, Mikesell and Lock grabbed their second win of the year with a straight-set win, 6-4 and 6-1. In the No. 2 doubles match and No. 3 doubles match it was all Cody. The team of Lee and James fell in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2 while the team of Lee and Andrew Halverson also lost in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1.

 

Green River Lady Wolves

For the Lady Wolves, the weekend went a little better as they bounced back from a Friday loss against Powell to beat Cody on Saturday.

Green River’s Anna Ujvary got it started for the Lady Wolves in the No. 1 singles match as she was able to get her first win of the year in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6. In the No. 2 singles match, Bailey Deverick also got her first win of the year in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.

On the doubles side, it did not go as good for Green River. The team of McKenzie Lucas and Isabel Leininger lost in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1. The team of Cassie Deverick and Mikayla Shutran also lost in two, 6-4 and 6-2. In the No. 3 doubles match, Holly Huber and Jessica Scott took the court for Green River. They suffered the same fate as the previous doubles teams losing in two, 6-4 and 6-1.

After the 3-2 loss to Powell on Saturday, the ladies came out strong against Cody. In the No. 1 singles match, Ujvary looked to repeat her Friday performance. Cody’s Meg Dickermen showed why she is one of the best in the state and she took down Ujvary easily, 6-0 and 6-0. Bailey Deverick was also coming off a win and Friday and was fired up to match the performance. Deverick as able to get her second win of the season, winning in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1.

On the doubles side, they team of McKenzie Lucas and Isabel Leininger came through with a win in a close match. Green River won the first set, 6-1 but lost in the second, 6-3. Lucas and Leiniger turned the tables on Cody in the third as they were able to take match with a 6-3 win in the deciding game. Also bouncing back from a Friday loss was Holly Huber and Cassie Deverick. They were able to take the win in two straight, 6-1 and 6-2. In the No. 3 doubles match, Green River’s Mikayla Shutran and Savannah Hook lost in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3.
