IDAHO FALLS, Idaho – A week after winning its own tournament, the Green River Wolves wrestlers matched the finish in one of the biggest tournaments in Idaho.
The Wolves dominated the Tiger-Grizz Invitational over the weekend as they added to their trophy case. Green River finished with 204 points which topped the charts. Columbia High School finished second, almost 20 points behind with 188. Bonneville, Highland and Kuna rounded out the top five finishes.
The only other Wyoming school to participate was Evanston. The Devils wrestled to a 19th-place finish with 57 points.
Individually, the Wolves had several top-ten finishes including two titles, Caleb Nathan at 113 and Shandon Welsh at 152.
Nathan opened the tourney with a bye and scored a fall in round two to earn a trip to the quarterfinals. He continued to roll with pins in the quarters and another in the semifinals over Kade Lincoln of Skyline.
In the finals, Nathan would face Teton High grappler Tanner Klingler who had two wins by pins and a major decision on his way to the championship match. Both wrestlers would go the distance and in the end, it would be Nathan by two, 8-6.
For Welsh, he would open the Tiger-Grizz with a technical fall in round one. He would follow with a 40-second pin in the second and another technical fall in the quarters. Welsh would have his hands full in the semifinals as he faced off against Bonneville wrestler Donivan Banks.
It would be close throughout with Welsh punching his ticket to the championships with an 8-4 decision. In the finals, it would be all Welsh as he pinned Kuna’s Dusty Jones at the 1:15 mark of the match.
Several other Wolves had strong finishes. Gage Byers just missed bringing home a third individual trophy. Byers scored three straight falls to earn a spot in the 120 final match. He would come up just short against Borah High School wrestler Peter Huntsman in a 5-2 decision.
At 106, Cyro Montoya bounced back from a loss in the semis to win his final two matches to bring home third. Also bringing home third at 220 was Brendan Hopkins. He would cruise to the semifinals but would come up just short in a 4-1 decision against Bonneville’s Christen Jamagin. Hopkins would bounce back with a win by pin in his next match and would end up taking third in a 6-1 decision over Brennan Reese of Spring Creek High School.
At 182, Blake Waite would fall early but respond. Waite would lose in the second round to Nathan Sargent of Blackfoot but would not get down. Waite responded with four straight wins by fall to earn a shot at third place. He would get an opportunity to get a little revenge as he would face Sargent for the second time. It would be Sargent who would again get the win as Waite would finish in fourth.
Also finishing in the top ten for Green River was Dylan Vangieson, who finished seventh at 170, Jacob Mortensen, who would finish seventh at 126 and Ira Dickinson, who would finish eighth at 138.
