Wyoming Heads Back to Fort Collins for Jack Christiansen Invite

LARAMIE – A week removed from competing at three different meets in California and Utah over a three-day span, the University of Wyoming track & field team will stay much closer to home on Saturday.

The Pokes will travel across the Wyoming-Colorado border to compete in Fort Collins, Colo., for the second time during the 2017 outdoor season on Saturday at the Jack Christiansen Invite, hosted by Colorado State. Wyoming last competed at CSU on March 25 at the Fum McGraw Open, winning two of three dual matchups on both the men’s and women’s sides.

The Pokes are coming off a weekend in which they recorded a whopping nine UW all-time top 10 marks, including two school records. Sophomore Jerayah Davis sprinted to her second school record of the 2016-17 track & field season with a blazing time of 11.42 seconds in the women’s 100 meters at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. Davis, who set the UW record for the women’s 60 meters during the indoor season with a time of 7.25, broke the 100 meters record of 11.50 set by Kereston Thomas in 2014. Two days later at the Mark Faldmo Invitational, Davis posted the No. 10 time in UW annals for the women’s 200 meters at 24.31. Davis now ranks third in the Mountain West this season for the 100 meters behind San Diego State’s Ashley Henderson (11.10) and UNLV’s Destiny Smith-Barnett (11.21).

Senior Jordan Charles continued his remarkably consistent outdoor season as well as his steady ascent up the UW all-time list for the men’s 110-meter hurdles at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, tying the program record with a time of 13.81 seconds. Charles joins Tom Garrison (1990) and Jason Medearis (1999) at the top of the list. Charles currently holds a huge lead for the event in the conference, as Colorado State decathlete Hunter Price ranks second at 13.98 while UW senior Scott Carter is third with an altitude-adjusted mark of 14.30. Carter’s raw time of 14.26 at the Mark Faldmo Invitational moved him to No. 8 on the UW all-time list for the event. The versatile Carter also furthered his personal best in the men’s triple jump in Long Beach, leaping 52 feet, 3.75 inches to improve his No. 3 mark on the UW all-time list.

Charles was also a member of the Cowboys’ 4×100-meter relay team that continued to impress at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, posting the No. 3 time in UW annals at 40.60. The squad of Charles, Kevin Blackett, Jace Marx and Sam Kirkeide followed that performance with a 40.61 performance at Utah State two days later.

Another highlight from UW’s chaotic weekend was senior Megan Brunette’s personal best time of 34:48.85 in the women’s 10,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday. Brunette’s time chopped over 30 seconds off her career best, earning her a second-place finish in her heat and bettering her No. 3 time on the UW all-time list.

Wyoming will attempt to continue rewriting the record books on Saturday in Fort Collins. The Jack Christiansen Invite begins at 9 a.m. MT with the men’s hammer throw, while track events start at 11 a.m. with the women’s 5,000 meters.

Cowboys Tops MW in Five Events

The University of Wyoming men’s track & field squad currently holds the conference lead in five different events. Ricky Faure tops the league in the men’s 800 meters after his season-best time of 1:48.89 at the Mark Faldmo Invite. Jordan Charles is first in the men’s 110-meter hurdles at 13.81, while Charles and the men’s 4×100-meter relay squad lead the league with a time of 40.60. Scott Carter’s triple jump of 52-3.75 is a league leader, while Damon Unland is tops in the hammer throw at 198 feet even.
