LARAMIE – With the outdoor track & field season in full swing, the University of Wyoming track & field team returns to the site of its first meet of the outdoor season, the University of Colorado’s Potts Track, for the CU Invite on Friday and Saturday. After a small group of Wyoming athletes had a solid showing at the Tom Benich Invite in Greeley, Colo., on Sunday, UW will suit up a full squad for this weekend’s competition in Boulder.
The Pokes have had an extremely successful start to the outdoor season, already posting 13 UW all-time top 10 marks to date. After jumping 52 feet, 1 inch in the triple jump in Greeley for a new lifetime best, senior Scott Carter heads to Boulder with his eyes on new personal records in the 110-meter hurdles and long jump. Carter ranks in the UW all-time top 10 for both the triple jump (No. 3) and 110-meter hurdles (No. 9), but has not competed in the hurdles or long jump outdoors since the 2015 season after redshirting his 2016 outdoor campaign. With a conference crown in the triple jump and a runner-up finish in the long jump during the 2017 indoor campaign under his belt, Carter would like to make significant contributions for Wyoming in both lateral jumps, as well as the 110-meter hurdles, during his final outdoor season in Laramie.
Another emerging storyline for Wyoming track & field is the recent success of junior Hannah Carr in the throws events. Carr has recorded personal bests in the shot put (47-1) and discus (159-8) already this outdoor season, moving into a tie for No. 8 on the UW all-time list for the discus after a third-place finish at the Tom Benich Invite. Sophomore Emelda Malm-Annan has also jumped out to a strong start outdoors, marking personal bests in the hammer throw in each of the previous two meets to move up to No. 8 on the UW all-time list for the event.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will get back on the track this weekend in Boulder after senior Jordan Charles was the lone track competitor representing Wyoming in Greeley. The action begins on Friday with the men’s and women’s hammer throw, javelin and triple jump competitions. Saturday’s schedule of events starts with a number of field events and the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11 a.m. MT.
Next Up
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will embark on a busy weekend that will include competition in three meets. A squad will travel to Long Beach, Calif., on April 13 for the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, while a couple distance athletes will head to Torrance, Calif., for the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. Finally, a group of athletes will compete at the Mark Faldmo Invitational in Logan, Utah, on April 14-15.
