The Cowboys will represent the Mountain Division and will face the San Diego State Aztecs from the West Division. Detailed ticket information for this year’s MW Championship Game will also be announced on Sunday morning once the site of the game has been determined.

The 2016 Cowboys are one of the great turnaround stories of this college football season as they improved from 2-10 in 2015 to 8-3 this season entering their regular-season finale at New Mexico.

The site of the 2016 MW Championship Game will be determined based on which team, Wyoming or San Diego State, is ranked higher in the College Football Playoff Selection Committee ranking. If neither team is ranked in the CFP rankings, the team ranked higher in a composite of computer rankings that the Mountain West Conference subscribes to will host the championship game.

For Wyoming, it is its first appearance in a conference championship game since 1996 when UW played in the inaugural Western Athletic Conference Championship Game versus BYU. That game was played at a neutral site — Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

This season, Wyoming has captured wins over two Top 25 ranked teams, marking the first time since 1999 that the Pokes had accomplished that. Those Top 25 wins came against then No. 13 ranked Boise State, by a score of 30-28 in Laramie, and against then No. 24 ranked San Diego State, by a score of 34-33 also in Laramie. San Diego State is currently 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the MW. The Aztecs host Colorado State on Saturday

The 2016 Mountain West Championship will kick off on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 5:45 p.m., Mountain Time and will be televised on ESPN.
