Yellowstone to Issue 2016 Firewood Collection Permits

Yellowstone to Issue 2016 Firewood Collection Permits
YELLOWSTONE –The National Park Service will be accepting public requests for those interested in possibly receiving a firewood collection permit for Yellowstone National Park during 2016.

Excess firewood is periodically available in the park for a variety of reasons, including wildland fire fuel mitigation, wind events, construction projects, or hazard tree removal.

Firewood collection permits for Yellowstone National Park will be awarded by lottery beginning this year. Individuals interested in participating in the lottery for a 2016 firewood permit should phone (307) 344-2116 from Friday, April 8 through Tuesday, April 12 and leave their name and daytime telephone number. Names left during these dates will be randomly selected, and successful applicants will be contacted as wood becomes available throughout the year.

After Tuesday, April 12 names will only be accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM by calling (307) 344-2107. Names received after April 12 will be processed in the order they are received after the initial list has been exhausted.

There is no guarantee that wood will be available or in sufficient quantity to provide for all permit requests. Fourteen permits out of 125 applicants were awarded in 2015.

Firewood permits cost $25 and allow permit holders to take up to three cords of wood. Specific site guidelines and regulations, including hours and dates of collection, will be explained at the time a permit is issued.
