RIVERTON – Green River continued to show why they are among the favorites for a state championship as they dominated a field of over 40 teams to add another win to the season total.

The Wolves scored 181 points to take the team title at the Ron Thon Memorial. Powell was a distant second with 154 while Campbell County rounded out the top three with 152.

A team who recently beat Green River, the Braves of Star Valley, finished down the ladder in fourth with 144 points. Cheyenne East scored 108 points to finish in the fifth position.

Brendan Hopkins and Gage Byers led the way for the Wolves as both brought home individual titles. Overall, the Wolves had four wrestlers battle in first-place matches.

Two pins to open had Byers in the quarters. After a technical fall win in the quarters, Byers would take down Dane Waldron in overtime to take a 5-3 decision. Waldron is 23-4 on the year.

In the title match, Byers would control and win by a six-point decision over Lander’s Mark McConnell, 9-3.

At 195, Hopkins again dominated the division. After an early bye, Hopkins won his next two by pin. In the semifinals, Hopkins scored a major decision, 11-3, over another 195 favorite RSHS’ John Nowland.

It was all Hopkins in the finals as he beat Lyman’s Dryden Menk by fall at the 5:06 mark of the match.

Montoya wrestled for a 106 title but came up short. He earned his way into the semis with two straight pins over opponents with a combined record of 41-24 on the season. In the semifinals, it was Montoya in a one-point decision over Brian Crawford (27-6) of Rocky Mountain.

He came up short in the finals to Joe Taylor of Glenrock, 10-4. Taylor has a strong record of 44-5 on the season.

Jordan Tucker battled through a tight 285 division. In the quarters, he won by a 7-3 decision and followed it with a 1-0 decision to earn a spot in the finals. It would be another close one with Worland’s Sampson Rich coming out with the win, 3-1.

Shandon Welsh and Caleb Nathan also had top fives for Green River. Welsh, who sat out of the Star Valley dual, returned to finish fifth. Nathan went 3-2 on the tournament to also bring home fifth.
