Wyoming Opens MW Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas  – The University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team began the 2016 MW Championships in College Station, Texas, on Wednesday. After the first day of events, UW is in seventh place with 51 total team points.

“Our divers did a great job today against tough competition,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said. “I’m proud of how they led us and I know they’re up for the challenge tomorrow. After today we are still right in the middle of everything. We then found ourselves in a bit of a hole, but everyone continued to work hard and compete.”

For the first time as a Cowgirl, Kari Campbell advanced to the 1-meter final event at the championships. Campbell recorded a score of 272.75 and finished in eighth place to pace UW. She was the lone Cowgirl in the final after posting a score of 268.80 and finishing seventh in the preliminary round.

Keely Bishop placed first in the “B” Final and ninth overall, after she took tenth in the prelims (260.10). Lauren Puglisi finished 12th overall and fourth in the consolation competition. During the prelims, Puglisi was 16th (238.30) and CeeJay Harris came in 23rd with a score of 224.95.

The Cowgirls opened the night by initially placing third in the 200 free relay, but were disqualified for an early takeoff. In the 800 free relay, a tandem of Kelly Sheldon, Emily Stucky, Keara Chang and Isobel Ryan touched the pads for a time of 7:20.06 to claim sixth place for UW. Despite the sixth place finish, it was the best time the Cowgirls had recorded at any MW championship meet.

“The 200 free was a great swim for us,” Johnson added. “Unfortunately, we made one small mistake by jumping a little too soon. I was happy with how they competed in both relays. Boise State and Nevada did what they needed to and had a great race in the 800 free.”

The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow with the 200 free, 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. The divers will take part in the 3-meter springboard event. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m., MT, as the finals will start at 5:30 p.m.

“We are fully aware we have a lot of swimming left to do,” Johnson mentioned. “We will stay focused and worry about the scoreboard at the end of the championships.”

Live results, team scores, event highlights and more information for Thursday is available on the MW Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship Central page. The meet is also available on the app Meet Mobile. The MW links are free of charge, while there is a $1.99 fee to view information on the Meet Mobile app.

Wyoming Golf to Tee Off Spring Season in Palm Springs

The University of Wyoming men’s golf team returns to the course hosting the eighth-annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate presented by Cleveland Golf, at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. UW will welcome 20 teams and 15 individuals to the three-day event.

This will be the fourth time to run the tournament Friday through Sunday. All three days will consist of 18 holes that will begin at 8:30 a.m. MT.

“It will be good for our guys to get on the road. It’s good that we will be able to start competing again. There is only so much practicing that we can do but right now we need to compete.” – UW Head Golf Coach Joe Jensen.

The Cowboys had six golfers finish with stroke averages of 74.4 or better in the fall. Senior Kamrin Allen led the team with a 72.1 stroke average. Following the lone senior, was junior Ryan Wallen with an average of 72.7. Next was sophomore Drew McCullough with a 73 strokes per round average.

Lastly, sophomores Quintin Pope, Arron Lickteig and Glenn Workman carded averages of 74.1, 74.2 and 74.4, respectively. The Cowboys look to improve on their already impressive fall season as Wyoming placed in the top-five in four of the five tournaments. UW’s highest finish was second, which came at the Cowboy Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Ariz.

“We played hard and very business-like in the fall,” Jensen added. “We will have to work really hard this spring because there is a lot of room that we have until we hit our peak. We will have to play well to finish well this upcoming season.”

The 2016 Desert Intercollegiate field will include Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, TCU, Texas Tech, Gonzaga, Colorado, Old Dominion, Cal Poly, Idaho, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State, UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Southern Utah, UC Riverside, UT-Arlington, Arkansas-Little Rock, Denver and Southern Illinois.

LARAMIE – The Wyoming tennis team (6-3 overall) battled back after losing the doubles point to sweep all six singles matches in its 6-1 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears (2-3 overall) on Sunday afternoon.

“Definitely didn’t start off the match like we normally do in doubles play with the energy,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “The players turned it around in singles and I’m pleased with that. It was a totally different outcome than doubles. We will work on some things and get prepared to play a tough Denver team next week.”

In doubles action, Northern Colorado took the early 1-0 lead. The duo of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg fell to Courtney Schulte and Hilary Walters-West, 6-3, while the 40th ranked team of Beth Coton and Remi Immler defeated Magdalena Stencel and Nastya Tokareva, 6-2, to win the point. At the number three spot, Dorottya Jonas and Miranda Talbert beat Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby, 7-6.

Wyoming rallied back in singles play by sweeping all six matches. Stencel won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, over Lea Krajcovicova followed by Jonas at the number two position with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Coton.

In the final two matches of the day, Talbert defeated Immler, 6-1, 6-2 followed by van Der Ploeg, 6-2, 6-4, over Battersby.
