What has been a barren stage over the last year will finally be lit up on Wednesday night as the Rock Springs High School (RSHS) Theatre Department puts on the Little Shop of Horrors musical.

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical, which follows the story of a plant that comes to earth and winds up in a flower shop that slowly feeds on human blood and flesh so it can grow bigger.

The Broadway production features music composed by Alan Menken, including “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Suddenly, Seymour”.

RSHS Technical Director Rick Matlock said that Little Shop of Horrors was the perfect choice for this year’s performance due to the smaller number of boys in the program and the fact that everyone loves a horror comedy.

“Everyone loves that genre and we’re trying to get the attention of some of the older people in town,” Matlock said.

Matlock added that the program has been very strict with COVID-19 guidelines in preparing for Little Shop of Horrors and that this year’s cast is a lot smaller, which has given students more one-on-one opportunities — something everyone has found value in.

“Overall everyone has liked the experience of working in smaller groups and I know they are all super excited for opening night,” Matlock said

Little Shop of Horrors will host opening night on Wednesday, April 14. The house will open at 6:30 pm with the show scheduled to get underway at 7 pm. The musical will also run the same times Thursday, Friday and Saturday with an additional matinee time at 1 pm on Saturday.

This year’s cast and crew features many of the same faces that had prepared to put on Matilda last year before it was canceled due to COVID-19.
