Pronghorns put undefeated record up as they open conference play on Friday; Tigers and Wolves looking for first win

SWEETWATER COUNTY – All three Sweetwater County high school football teams will be on the road this weekend, but most eyes continue to be on the little town of Farson-Eden as fans watch the Pronghorns continue to climb the rankings in six-man football.

Farson-Eden climbed to fourth in the rankings after breaking into the fifth position for the first time in history. The Pronghorns followed their season-opening win as they soundly defeated the Green River Junior Varsity to move to 2-0 on the season.

Hold everything Pronghorn fans. The strong start will be tested in week three as they will travel to fifth-ranked Dubois for an 2 p.m. conference battle.

WyoPreps rankings continued to see Guernsey-Sunrise hold the top spot for the third week while Snake River jumped from being ranked fourth last week to second. Meeteetsee dropped to third after being tied for second in the rankings last week while Farson moved from fifth to fourth. Kaycee dropped from being tied for second to tied for fifth with Dubois who moved back into the top five.

4A Conference

In 4A, the Tigers will take on Cheyenne Central. Even though Rock Springs is continuing to search for that first win, the Tigers have had strong showings on the field. Last week, the Tigers as a team had just over 300 yards rushing. Matt Fowler of Rock Springs ran for 117 yards on 25 carries while Garrett McGaha of Rock Springs ran 24 times for 126 yards and a score.

Central is also looking for its first win of the year and is coming off a loss to top-ranked Gillette last week, 35-7.

The WyoPreps rankings remained the same in 4A. Gillette remained at the top followed by Natrona, Sheridan, Cheyenne East and Cheyenne South.

3A Conference

Green River is also looking for win one and just came up short last week in an offensive shootout against Rawlins. The Wolves will travel to Torrington as they will face off for the first time in almost 60 years. Torrington will be a tough test for the Wolves as they have won both games so far this season.

Green River looked sharp offensively against Rawlins with almost 500 total yards of offense. Quarterback Tyler Vendetti was one of the statistical leaders in the conference last week. Vendetti ran 11 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns while throwing for 145 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Vendetti finished with 33 touches against Rawlins for over 302 all-purpose yards in week two.

One of Vendetti’s favorite targets in the air has been Tanner Trumble. Trumble has had over 100 yards receiving in both the first and second week. Against Rawlins, Trumble had 105 yards receiving.

Defensively, the Wolves will need to show improvement if they hope to shut down Torrington. Against Rawlins, the Green River secondary gave up over 300 yards through the air which accounted for five scores. The Wolves did have an interception in the game. Overall, Rawlin’s quarterback Jace Allard finished with 404 yards of total offense against the Wolves defense last Friday.

When WyoPreps released the rankings, there was only a small change in 3A. Powell remained in first while Douglas and Cody switched places as Douglas moved into second and Cody fell to two. Riverton remained fourth while Jackson stayed in the fifth spot. Torrington is currently in sixth in the 3A rankings.

2A Conference

When WyoPreps released this week’s rankings, several regional teams continued to lead the conference. Big Horn has remained in the top spot but Wheatland jumped from fifth to second. The Buffalos of Mountain View remained in third while Newcastle also remained in fourth. Big Piney, who was unranked previously, moved into the fifth spot after a big week two.

Both Mountain View and Big Piney had individual performances that stood out in week two. The Buffs quarterback, Austin Housekeeper completed 11 of 15 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns. He finished with 270 all-purpose yards on 26 touches.

Defensively, Big Piney had a big game from JD Fear. While Fear is his last name, he showed why with 13 and a half tackles in week two. He also had two fumble recoveries.

Also in 2A, Pinedale’s Caleb Raney also had a solid game offensively as he finished with 189 all-purpose yards on 10 attempts. He also scored 18 points.

Lingle-Ft. Laramie moved from fourth to third while Southeast dropped from third to fourth. Tongue River moved into fifth after not being ranked last week.
