ROCK SPRINGS – After the department of Health received another complaint about Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, an investigation has again declared the complaint was unfounded.
At the board meeting on Wednesday, MHSC Chief Executive Officer Jerry Klein reported the hospital had another investigation for a few days in June after the Wyoming Department of Health received a complaint about the hospital. In an attempt to be as transparent as possible, Klein has discussed the past several investigations in a public setting.
This investigation focused on the surgical infection control processes. Klein said the investigator spent three days at MHSC looking at processes, policies and even sat in and watched a C-Section performed.
Klein said the hospital received a letter from the health department on the investigation and it stated the complaint was unfounded and MHSC follows proper procedures. Klein thanked the Obstetrics Department and the infection control team for the professionalism during the investigation.
“They did their jobs like they do every day,” Klein said.
Not only did Klein speak about the investigation, he also said Chief Nursing Officer Deb Gaspar and himself asked the investigator if there was anything they were doing the hospital could do better. Klein said the investigator said everything was done very well and he did not see anything he would change.
Medical Office Building
Recently, MHSC gave the Wyoming County Commission a tour of the facility here in Rock Springs. Klein said the commissioners from other counties were amazed to see what the sixth-penny tax could do for a community. Many other counties in Wyoming have not been successful in getting a sixth-cent tax approved by voters.
Klein said the voters of Sweetwater County are the reason there are such nice facilities here and other counties are not as fortunate. He stressed again it is all because of the support of the residents of Sweetwater County.
The new Regional Cancer Center opening has been a success. Klein said on the chemotherapy side, they seen a record number of visitors, 92, since the opening. On the radiation therapy side, they have had multiple patients so far.
Klein said they are really proud of the new center and the patients have spoken very highly about having it. He also said the Huntsman is also impressed with it. He explained the new Regional Center here is basically their facility with the changes they would have made if they knew then what they know now because of their involvement with the center from the beginning.
To celebrate the new Medical Office Building, the hospital, in conjunction with National Hot Dog Day, will be having public tours and a picnic starting at 5 p.m. at MHSC on July 23.
Board officials
It is that time of year again: the MHSC board voted on officials. Board member Robert Wallendorff said the hospital has had a successful year and voted to keep the officials the same. It was unanimously accepted.
Officials include Artis Kalivas as president, Joe Manatos as vice president, Rose Moseby as Secretary and Dr. Grant Christensen as treasurer.
Klein has repeatedly said he is lucky to have a board which is so involved and so active in the hospital. He said he has worked in other places where it is not like it is here. On Wednesday, Klein again thanked the board for the support they provide to move the hospital forward.
