LOGAN, Utah – The Wyoming tennis team (13-3 overall, 1-0 MW) won its conference opener with a 7-0 sweep over the Utah State Aggies (9-7 overall, 0-1 MW) on Friday afternoon. The Cowgirls have now won six straight conference openers.
“The team was phenomenal today in the way they went about business,” head coach Dean Clower said. “From last night’s warm-up to the match the team was all business. During the match, we executed what we have been working on all year. I can’t be more proud of the effort each person has put into getting to the level they have. Utah State is a well-coached team and to beat them on the road in Logan is no small task.”
In doubles action, the Cowgirls jumped out quickly by winning two matches. The number three team of Magdalena Stencel and Miranda Talbert defeated Monika Van de Vondel and Maggie O’Meara, 6-3, followed by Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg beating Lucy Octave and Ekaterina Tugarinova, 6-3. Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko were down 5-2 against Nini Guensler and Sabrina Demerath but didn’t finish.
Wyoming brought the win home by taking all six matches on the singles side. van Der Ploeg made quick work at the third spot defeating Van de Vondel, 6-4, 6-1. Jonas battled a tough first set but came out on top 7-5, 6-2, against Tugarinova while Stencel clinched the match for the Cowgirls with her 7-5, 6-3 win over Guensler. Koonik defeated Demerath, 6-3, 7-5, while Milka Genkova battled for a tough three-set win, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), against Octave. Tkachenko closed out the day with a 6-4, 6-3, win against Hannah Jones.
