Sagebrush is blooming all over Sweetwater County. Can you tell? Our fall allergy season begins each year in late August as sagebrush wakes up from its summer slumber and begins its yearly growth cycle by releasing pollen. Sagebrush and some other desert plants live on a reverse seasonal cycle; blooming in the fall and growing in the winter when moisture from melting snow is available. They produce seeds and then go dormant as summer approaches.

Fall allergy symptoms include itchy eyes, nasal discharge, nasal swelling, and congestion. Sinus pain and pressure can affect some patients.
Dr. W. Davis Merritt, MD of Fremont Ear Nose and Throat recommends:
.
Try using a daily, non-sedating antihistamine like loratadine and an over-the-counter topical steroid nasal spray like fluticasone. If these medicines are used together, every day, during the fall pollen season this can really help control allergy symptoms. Both of these medicines are available without a prescription at your local pharmacy. Using a nasal saline rinse after outdoor activities can remove irritating pollen from the nasal passages and also help control symptoms.”
.
If this doesn’t provide enough relief, Dr. Merritt, a board certified ENT specialist, and his assistant Nancy Brewster, PA-C can help. They are both specially trained and certified in ENT allergy testing and desensitization. They are seeing patients in their new clinic location at Aspen Medical Center in Rock Springs and at their other office in Lander.
