BOISE, Idaho – Freshman Milka Genkova won the final match of the day to help the Wyoming tennis team (14-3 overall, 2-0 MW) to a 4-3 victory over the Boise State Broncos (11-6 overall, 0-2 MW) on Sunday morning.
“The team didn’t play especially well today, but like true champions reached down and found ways to win,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of the way each individual found ways to get it done today. Once again, our depth shined. We have eight highly competitive athletes that can get it done anywhere, anytime on any court.”
The two teams battled in doubles action with UW coming away with two wins to go up early in the match. The number three team of Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko defeated Nancy Menjivar and Jovana Kuljanin, 6-1, but the Broncos answered with Anja Dokic and Lilian Poling beating Magdalena Stencel and Miranda Talbert, 6-4. It came down to the team of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg against Hanna Kantenwein and Wiktoria Nosek. The match went back and forth until Boise State went up 6-5. Koonik and van Der Ploeg rallied back and won the next two games to win the match 7-6 (7-5).
The Cowgirls increased the lead to 3-0 winning the first two in singles. Tkachenko won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, over Kirsty Venter, followed by Jonas winning, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, against Poling. Boise State responded by taking the next three matches to even it up at three all. Kantenwein beat van Der Ploeg, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 at the number three position. Koonik lost a tough one, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 against Nosek and Stencel dropped a three-set contest, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, against Dokic.
The match would come down to the number four position between Genkova and Menjivar. Boise State won the opening set, 6-4, and seemed to be in control 6-5 in the second. Wyoming rallied back and won the next two games to win the set 7-6 (7-4). She came out in the third and went up 2-0. Menjivar won the next game, but Genkova took the next four of five to win the set, 6-2, and the match to give the Cowgirls a 4-3 victory.
