CHEYENNE — Wyoming is hosting several Washington State local officials for a two-day tour of Campbell County and its industries. Governor Matt Mead and the Northeast Wyoming Municipal Leaders (NEWY), a group of Wyoming local leaders geared towards educating the public on the energy industry, are sponsoring the tour.
Governor Mead supports opportunities to showcase the importance of coal to the country, along with environmentally conscious reclamation, coal transportation, and modern power production. Wyoming is the nation’s largest coal producer, exporting about 400 million tons per year to the rest of the country. 40% of the nation’s electricity comes from coal.
“The Legislature and I see Washington as a partner in bringing Wyoming coal to export markets,” Governor Mead said. “I believe that a good conversation between our two states can move us forward. I am glad to welcome these Washington State officials to Wyoming.”
The Washington delegates will tour:
- Cloud Peak Energy’s Cordero Rojo mine to observe coal mining, including safety and efficiency measures.
- The Dry Fork coal-fired power plant to see firsthand a new power plant using modern technology to reduce emissions.
- A working ranch to see energy and environmental balances.
- Gillette College Technical Center to learn more about educational opportunities for high-growth and high-wage careers in the energy industry.
