CASPER — The Green River Lady Wolves will travel to Casper this week as the lone Sweetwater County representative at the 4A state volleyball tournament, opening play Thursday against Sheridan with a chance to begin another run toward a state championship.
Green River enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed out of the West after finishing as runner-up at the 4A West Regional. The Lady Wolves will face Sheridan at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the opening round.
A win would send Green River to the semifinals Friday at 6 p.m. against the winner of Kelly Walsh and Star Valley. The Lady Wolves could potentially meet Kelly Walsh again after falling to the Lady Trojans in last year’s state championship match. Because Green River and Kelly Walsh are on the same side of the bracket, at least one new team will compete for this year’s state championship
If Green River wins its first two matches, the Lady Wolves would advance to the state championship game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and have an opportunity to finish the season with a title.
A loss Thursday would move Green River into the consolation bracket and eliminate the Lady Wolves from championship contention, but their season would not immediately come to an end. They would face the loser of the Kelly Walsh-Star Valley matchup in an elimination game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Regardless of whether Green River reaches the championship match or drops into the consolation bracket, winning two matches before suffering two losses would guarantee the Lady Wolves a top-four finish. A third victory in the consolation bracket would secure third place, while a third consecutive win in the championship bracket would earn the Lady Wolves the state title.
After reaching the championship match a year ago, Green River will look to make another deep tournament run in Casper. The Lady Wolves open Thursday afternoon against Sheridan, with a state title and another opportunity to compete for a championship ahead.
