This week we had a chance to catch up with Randy McConnell, local AAA Insurance Agent, to learn more about how he meets customers Insurance needs.
Randy has worked in customer service locally his entire adult life, which has helped him earn the trust of our community.
“When I saw there was an available AAA Agency in Rock Springs I took a huge leap of faith,” said Randy.
That leap of faith has paid off.
It is clear that McConnell believes in AAA Insurance. Many people connect AAA with roadside service or travel benefits, but there’s more to it. AAA is actually a full-service insurance agency. “My office is unique in the fact that is is the only agent owned office in the State of Wyoming.”
AAA members from around the world stop in Randy’s office every day, to pick up free maps, or tour books for their adventures.
McConnell’s current focus is continuing to build while holding up his commitment of service to his existing clients. His office mainly serves the western half of Wyoming by providing AAA membership services, home insurance, auto insurance, and also insurance for boats, RV’s, motorcycles, and ATV’s.
Like any business, Randy’s didn’t come to be without any challenges. “The biggest challenge I had when opening up this office was trying to make sure it wasn’t a selfish decision, because there was a possibility of not having food on the table.”
Randy told us that many of the local agents from competing agencies, reached out to congratulate him and let him know they are available if he needs anything!
With perseverance, McConnell overcame his initial challenges. “Every year my worries about not having food on the table become less and less.”

“I couldn’t have done it without my family’s support, AAA leaders support, competing agents support, and of course, all the clients that have trusted me and brought their business to me,” Randy said.
Randy told us about his most satisfying moment and business, which he says will stick in his mind forever. During his first year, when the office was quiet and in the infant stages, Randy’s friend, Jack Slater came in wanting a proposal. When they finished comparing his existing coverage and what Randy could offer – Randy’s coverage was slightly more expensive, but Jack said, “Write it up. You’re new to this business, you’re my friend, and I’m going to help you.”
Jack taught Randy a lesson that day that he will never forget. “The support from friends, clients, and previous employers has been overwhelming. My cup overflows!”
When asked about his favorite aspect of being a business owner, Randy told us, “Not having to bite my tongue if I disagree with the boss, because I am not good at biting my tongue!”
In all seriousness, Randy also enjoys being able to mold the business the way he feels is best, using the business sense he learned from previous employers.
Randy explained, that to him, business success like any kind of success involves balance. “A person can kill themselves dedicating too much of their time on one task. I feel successful when I have enough time to enjoy my family, a couple of bucks to take the kids out for ice cream, the lights are on, and clients are referred to me. Let’s call that business success.”
