James married the love of his life, Deanna Jennifer Orozco, on October 28, 2017, in Redmond, Oregon. Together, they built a life filled with adventure and love. James reveled in the simple joys of life, especially those shared with Deanna whether dancing the night away, fishing, or hiking. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace and joy in activities like hunting, panning for gold, and simply spending time in nature, far from the hustle and bustle of the world.

James was also a talented craftsman. He invested time in sewing, wood carving, and cross-stitching, and he took particular joy in making dream catchers for his wife. His hands were seldom still, whether he was creating art or repairing what was broken.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Deanna J. Orozco-Hilburn, and his two daughters, Zoey Destarte Hilburn and Saddie Tomor Hilburn, both residing in Wichita, Kansas. He also leaves behind his mother, Pheronia Kay Fortenberry of Rock Springs, two brothers, Meril Hilburn of Ontario, Oregon, and Michael Hilburn of Carlsbad, New Mexico; his sister, Sharon DeMier of Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss him dearly.
