LARAMIE – For the first time in her career, Wyoming tennis player Dorottya Jonas has been selected the Mountain West Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. It’s the first time since Magdalena Stencel earned the honor on March 25, 2015.
Jonas, a senior from Gyal, Hungary, went 3-0 overall last week helping the Cowgirls to wins over Utah State (7-0) and Bosie State (4-3). She defeated Ekaterina Tugarinova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, and followed it up with a three-set win, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, against Lilian Poling of Boise State. She and partner Ana Tkachenko went 1-0 with a 6-1 victory over Nancy Menjivar and Jovana Kuljanin of Boise State.
She currently has an overall record of 17-10 in singles play and 13-3 this spring, while winning 10 out of her last 11 matches. In doubles action, she and Tkachenko are 13-4 overall and 12-2 in dual play. With her win over Poling, Jonas is now second all-time in career singles victories with 76.
The Cowgirls are currently 14-3 overall and riding a five-match winning streak. Wyoming returns to action on Friday, April 14 against the New Mexico Lobos in Laramie.
