GREEN RIVER — The beloved Dr. Seuss once said; “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” Today, Green River’s Mayor, Pete Rust, spent his morning reading to students at Harrison Elementary School. March second is National Read Across America Day, created by the National Education Association. This “unofficial” national holiday was first celebrated in 1998. This day, which just so happens to coincide with the birthday of Pulitzer Prize winning children’s author Dr. Seuss, is a call for children and youth all across America to celebrate the joy of reading.
Mayor Rust began his visit to Harrison at Cindy Brandjord’s Kindergarten class where he and the children read Dr. Seuss’s “ABC” and learned about lots of silly creatures like a Zizzer-Zarre-Zus whose name begins with Z, as you can plainly see.
Mayor Rust also stopped by to read for Ms. Laura Schneider’s kindergarten class who were busy making oobleck. That’s the crazy material that falls from the sky in Dr. Seuss’ book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck”. The kids cleaned up and settled in for Dr. Seuss’s story “In a People House”. Mayor Rust also read to Sara Way’s kindergarten class and the students in Mrs. Noble’s Basic Living Skills Program.
Mr. Rust enjoyed the morning as much as the children did and sincerely looks forward to next year’s celebration of Read Across America Day.
