COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — Western Wyoming Community College wrestling finished the 2019 NJCAA Wrestling Championship on a strong note. The Mustangs placed two third-place wrestlers and one fifth place during Saturday. WWCC finished eighth overall with 71.5 team points.
Heading into Saturday’s competition, WWCC pushed through Landon Brown, Connor Kirkland and Kyle Evans into the consolation bracket.
Evans, who wrestled at 141, started the morning off with a convincing victory 13-2 over Barton’s Sandler. The dominating victory hit a brick wall against Clackamas’ Ozuna in the quarterfinals. A 10-2 Ozuna win knocked Evans out of the bracket, placing him fifth overall in the 141 pound category.
Kirkland won his first two matches on Friday which kept him in the running for the championship in the 197 pound weight class. Kirkland reached the semifinals but came up short in an 8-7 loss to Clackamas’ Daniels.
The one-point defeat knocked Kirkland into the consolation bracket. The sophomore wrestler earned a pin during his first match followed by a three-point victory to win the 197 consolation bracket, placing him third overall in the weight class.
Brown who was knocked out of the championship in the opening round, bounced back and won six straight matches to take home the 285 pound consolation bracket. Brown also placed third in his weight class.
As a team, WWCC finished eighth with 71.5 team points that were scored by 10 Mustang wrestlers.
