ROCK SPRINGS – There was no decision made on a request from the Bitter Creek and Western Model Railroad Club to use a room in the Historic Train Depot downtown. However, the request was officially put on file at Tuesday night’s Rock Springs City Council meeting.

Recently the city received a letter from acting club President R.J. Pieper  requesting the use of the west room at the Train Depot. The Rock Springs City Council did not discuss the request but after the meeting, Rock Springs Mayor Carl Demshar spoke to SweetwaterNOW about where they are in the process.

The club used the old Bunning Transfer Building for several years before it went through the recent remodeling. In his letter to the council,  Pieper explained for many years, the group was a staple of historic downtown and after some time on hiatus, they would like to return.

The transfer building is now becoming the new home for the Rock Springs Main Street/Urban Renewal Agency. Demshar said the biggest reason the council did not take action on the club’s request was because they are waiting for the Rock Springs Main Street/URA move to be completed.

Demshar said the city is in discussions with the club about the use of a room in the train depot. He added he expects the request to come before the council as early as the next meeting for approval. In his opinion, Demshar said he could not think of a better fit for the use of the space. He also said several of the councilmen he has talked to about the request feel the same way.

With many events taking place downtown and the depot being open during many of them, Demshar added the club’s model train setup will be a “excellent” addition to these events as well as a great opportunity for  the public to experience and enjoy it as well.
