This is a “Heads-Up” for those of you involved in food based charities. Here’s a quick history of our near future. This virus thing will pass. When it does it will go away faster than anyone imagines.
Shortly after the howling, twirling in one spot, screaming, hair pulling and panic subsides, almost all foodstuffs hoarded and panic purchased will begin to make their way to the landfill. This also will occur faster than anyone thinks it will.
I would suggest to those of you in food based charities to coordinate starting now to place yourselves between the panic driven hoarder and the landfill. This could be a windfall of biblical proportions if you position yourself correctly.
You’ll need to plan and coordinate your efforts and warehouse space. Please think out of the can. Usually stated “think out of the box” but you are probably accustomed to thinking inside the can.
I would suggest you start lining up all the freezer space you can find for the frozen goods. You might not be able to directly distribute frozen foodstuffs but it world make for great fundraising.
Between hamburger and hot dog grilling, chili, baked beans and gumbo there is very little that couldn’t be utilized. You may have the busiest summer of your life but I do see an opportunity for you.
On a personal note, I would think it a shame for all that food to end up in the dump. I’m suggesting you get on it. You’re going to need a plan to make it work.
The tough part will be getting between the panic hoarder and the garbage can. I’m not sure how to do that, but that’s why we have each other. We have help thinking of solutions.
Reminder: you don’t have anywhere near the time you think you have. When this happens it will happen fast, faster than anyone predicts.
