GREEN RIVER — The Green River City Council held one of its shortest meetings of the year Thursday night, but not before a resident raised concerns over raising sewer and water rates, the cost increase of the wastewater treatment plant and city employee raises. 

During the citizen comments portion of the meeting, a man that identified himself as Mike Sousa told the council that this water bill had gone from $150 to $215 a month. He said that he has also heard that the sewer rates could be increased by $90 in the next two years. 

Sousa asked why the wastewater treatment plant ended up costing the city $50 million when the original projection was $20 million and who is accountable for it. 

“I don’t understand because I know a $30 million oops is a lot of money, and I don’t understand who’s accountable for it.” 

He also questioned a 6% raise for city employees, saying the miners only get a 3% raise when he worked. 

Mayor Pete Rust told Sousa that the council would not be able to answer all of his questions during the meeting but his comments were on the record. 

“Ok, so you’ve raised tons of issues,” Mayor Pete Rust told the citizens. “And we’re not going to answer those all right now.”

City Administrator Reed Clevenger offered to set up a meeting with Sousa and go through each of his concerns.  

“From my point of view, there’s all kinds of issues that you’ve talked about that are not correct,” Clevenger said. “I’d be glad to sit down on each of the issues with you and walk through them so you have a good understanding.”
